THE JOURNAL · LIVING IN ARGENTINA
Travel access, Mercosur residence and the landscapes, education, healthcare, food and wine that make Argentina worth exploring.
Argentina-Passport Editorial · Reviewed 6 October 2026

An Argentine passport can offer something valuable to an internationally minded household: wider travel access, a route to regional residence and a permanent connection to a country with remarkable variety. But its appeal becomes more interesting when you look beyond the document. Argentina is a place where a city life built around cafés, culture and good food can sit alongside plans for mountain holidays, vineyard weekends and time in nature.
Here is what makes that combination compelling, and what deserves a closer look before you make it part of your own plans.
The value at a glance
International travel: Henley lists access to 169 destinations. The score includes visa-free, visa-on-arrival and ETA access; it is not 169 countries with no paperwork.
Mercosur residence: A simplified route to apply for residence in participating countries. Applications and conditions still apply; the agreement includes a nationality-duration condition for naturalised citizens.
A home in Argentina: The opportunity to build a life around its cities, landscapes and culture. Your experience depends on location, budget and circumstances.
Education and healthcare: Established universities and specialist medical institutions. Compare individual institutions, admission rules, coverage and costs.
1. A passport that makes more journeys possible
Henley’s published ranking lists the Argentine passport with access to 169 destinations, placing it 16th in its 2026 ranking reviewed on 6 October 2026. The practical attraction is flexibility: more trips that may not require a traditional visa application before departure. Henley Passport Index
The wording matters. Henley counts destinations, including territories, and its score includes visa-on-arrival and electronic travel authorisation access. It does not mean you can arrive everywhere without preparation, fees or conditions. Its methodology measures short visits, not a right to settle or work abroad. Henley methodology
For example, Argentine nationals are included in the EU’s visa-exempt list for short stays, generally up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen area. The UK lists Argentina among nationalities eligible for an ETA; most eligible visitors need that authorisation before travelling. EU visa rules, UK ETA guidance
Check the destination’s official requirements when booking. Passport validity, purpose of travel, previous stays and individual circumstances can affect entry.
2. Mercosur: an opportunity to think regionally
For someone considering a future in South America, regional residence can matter as much as holiday travel. The Mercosur Residence Agreement provides qualifying nationals with a simplified route to apply for temporary residence of up to two years in another participating country, with a route to permanent residence subject to further requirements. Residents under the agreement have rights to work and equal treatment under the applicable rules. Mercosur’s residence overview
There is an important qualification for prospective new citizens: the agreement’s definition covers nationality by birth and nationality acquired through naturalisation held for five years. Do not assume that newly acquired Argentine citizenship immediately opens every regional residence route. Check the receiving country’s implementation and any other bilateral route that may apply. This is a residence application framework, not automatic permission to live anywhere in South America. Agreement text, Articles 2, 4, 5 and 9
3. Landscapes that give you very different ways to live

Argentina’s range is part of its attraction: the Andes, Patagonia’s lakes and glaciers, Iguazú’s subtropical surroundings, the Iberá wetlands and the open Pampas offer very different experiences within one country. Its official tourism overview describes pronounced regional differences in geography and climate. Visit Argentina
That variety gives a relocation plan room to breathe. You might want a Buenos Aires base and occasional outdoor trips, or decide that proximity to mountains and vineyards matters more than a large-city address. Those are personal choices, rather than benefits a passport delivers by itself.
Try ordinary life as well as the postcard experience. Test the neighbourhood, seasonal weather, transport and connections to the places you want to visit. A memorable holiday is a good introduction; a comfortable weekly routine is a better basis for choosing a home.
4. Education with institutions worth taking seriously

Argentina has universities with an international profile. The University of Buenos Aires reported 84th place in the QS World University Rankings 2027, published in June 2026. That is a concrete example of the country’s academic standing, rather than a promise that every school or degree offers the same experience. University of Buenos Aires
For a family, the useful questions are closer to home: curriculum, language, places available, school fees and the daily commute. For university study, check course language, admission requirements and how a qualification will be recognised where you intend to use it. Argentina’s 2025 migration reform also changed the framework governing foreign residents’ access to services; confirm the rules for your status and institution before budgeting. Official reform text
5. Healthcare: look at the provider and the cover
Buenos Aires has medical institutions with internationally recognised credentials. Hospital Italiano reported its fourth consecutive Joint Commission International accreditation as an academic hospital in November 2024. That offers one useful point of reference when investigating care. Hospital Italiano
Quality, waiting times and access differ between providers and locations. Before moving, compare hospitals, doctors and insurance plans for your household’s actual needs, including exclusions and out-of-pocket costs.
Avoid the broad claim that healthcare is free for every foreign visitor. The 2025 reform provides emergency access regardless of migration status and equal public-system access for permanent foreign residents. Outside those cases, routine care in nationally administered facilities is subject to insurance or payment under the relevant conditions. Provincial and provider arrangements should be checked separately. DNU 366/2025, Article 3
6. Food that makes everyday life enjoyable

For anyone who loves good beef, a well-chosen Argentine parrilla can be a highlight. But the appeal of the asado is also social: an unhurried meal, conversation and time around the table. Argentina’s tourism board presents it alongside empanadas and pizza as part of the country’s shared food culture. Typical Argentine dishes
The pleasure is in exploring: regional empanadas, a neighbourhood favourite and meals you would happily return to week after week. Meat quality depends on the producer, cut and restaurant; a country’s reputation cannot guarantee every plate. There is no need to make a “best in the world” claim to explain why food can be a meaningful part of Argentina’s attraction.
7. Wine country you can make part of your plans

Argentina’s wine tourism spans vineyards, winery stays, tastings and meals across regions including Mendoza, Salta and Patagonia. Its official wine-tourism platform is a useful starting point for exploring that variety. Visit Argentina wine tourism
There is more to discover than one familiar bottle. Patagonia’s wine route includes Malbec, Pinot Noir and other varieties; Argentina’s wine institute identifies Torrontés Riojano as the country’s emblematic white wine. Patagonia wine route, National Institute of Viticulture
For a wine enthusiast, that creates a rich set of places to explore. Taste and value remain personal, and a bottle’s price or reputation is no substitute for finding what you enjoy.
What would make Argentina valuable to you?
